Welcome to the Becker Lab at the University of South Carolina, directed by Dr. Kimberly Becker.

Our mission is to extend the reach and impact of children’s mental health services through our research. While our team studies a variety of topics within children’s mental health services, our research is guided by three values related to people, ideas, and impact:

Our work is guided by a respect for human diversity and a commitment to promoting equity, particularly for those from marginalized or disadvantaged backgrounds. We strive to nurture authentic partnerships that elevate the voices of our collaborators and those with lived experiences who are represented in our science (e.g., youth and families, mental health providers, service administrators).

Our work is guided by attention to the limitations of conventional scientific methods and theories. We strive to conduct paradigm-shifting science; that means, to build new ways to solve problems when the old ways no longer work. Integrating research from disciplines outside of clinical psychology is instrumental to this work.

Our work is also guided by a commitment to solving problems that are meaningful to people with lived experiences in mental health service systems. We strive to be applied scientists whose work can be readily incorporated into everyday settings.
